As a young man, Eknath Easwaran visited Mahatma Gandhi – not to observe his political style, but to learn the secret of how he achieved his greatness. Easwaran relates the dramatic events of Gandhi’s life through the lens of this theme: the unfolding of his deep inner resources. Then he shows how -- inspired by Gandhi´s life -- we too can claim our inner power and make our own contribution to our community and world.

Gandhi started life as a shy youth, full of fears. He studied law in London, but failed in its practice until he was hired to help with a case in South Africa. Shaken by the indignities of the apartheid he experienced there, he resolved to fight it, and spent the next twenty-one years in South Africa as the champion of immigrant Indians, rich and poor. During this period he transformed himself and developed his methods of nonviolent leadership. He returned to India where over time he became the “Mahatma,” great soul, and the acknowledged leader of the 400 million Indians in their successful nonviolent struggle for independence.

Many books have been written about Gandhi´s nonviolent revolution. Here, Eknath Easwaran describes Gandhi´s personal spiritual evolution.
