As is common in the demographic transition experienced by countries worldwide, death rates have fallen sharply. The natural growth rate, which is the difference between birth and death rates was 1.93% in 1993.

There is a wide variation in the birth rates from the national average among the different states and between rural and urban areas. During 1993, rates in rural areas continued to be higher at 30.3% as compared to 23.5% in urban areas.
