India is the world's second largest producer of two-wheelers. This segment was the source of a major acceleration in the growth of the automobile industry in the second half of the eighties. The passenger car segment also grew during the eighties after Maruti Udyog, which is largely owned by the government, started production. Commercial vehicle production is concentrated in two private enterprises.
