There are totally 394 sugar factories in India. These mills crush about 130 million tonnes of sugarcane per annum. The sugar industry is the single largest employer in rural India. It employs about 350,000 people. Government regulates distribution and prices of sugar. The Sugar industry has continued to remain under a compulsory licensing regime, and sugar exports are canalised through designated agencies, nominated by the Govt., which also determines the export quotas.
