| NRIs protest in front of UN against Pak intrusion |
By: INDOlink NY Bureau, July 5, 1999
Angered by naked aggression by Pakistan on Indian soil by Islamic militants, aided and abetted by trigger happy military hawks in Pakistan, and propelled by the desire to express their solidarity with valiant Indian armed forces and their families, Indian-Americans, cutting across linguistic and caste barriers staged a protest demonstration in front of the United Nations on July 2, 1999 urging the world body to declare Pakistan a terrorist state.
The demonstrators carried placards, "Pakistan out of Kashmir," "Pakistan is exporting terrorism all over the world," "Pakistan is supporter of the master terrorist Bin Laden," "Yesterday World Ttrade Center, Today Kargil (Kashmir) and tomorrow any city of the world," "Stop all financial aid to Pakistan," etc.
In a memorandum submitted to Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Anna, the deputation comprising of N. Kataria, R.P. Sood, Arish Sahani, Jagdish Sewhani and Prem N. Chopra expressed outrage at the "mutilation and torturing of six Indian soldiers to death" by Pakistani army in violation of Geneva Convention. The Memorandum also brought to the attention of the Secretary General that Pakistan has openly violated the de facto situation and has committed premeditated aggression. In view of Pakistan'c close association with the deadly terrorist Osma Bin Laden and her logistic complicity with fundamentalist Mujahideens of Afghanistan, Pakistan has today become a stronghold of terrorism: posing a grave threat to the security of the Indian Subcontinent. The delegation also requested Kofi Annan that "in view of the grave realities of the present inflammable situation, Sir, a great responsibility lies on your shoulders as the Secretary General of the United Nations. It is a time for you to speak clear, loud and strong to curb Pakistan of its terrorist activities. The only way to do so is to declare Pakistan a terrorist state, and save the whole Asian region from a nuclear holocaust.
The demonstration was a huge success in spite of Friday, July 2, being a working day. The following Indian associations participated in the protest demonstration. Federation of Indian Associations of New York, Overseas Sindhu Sabha, Kashmir Solidarity, leaders of Panun Kashmir, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Sikh Sangat of America, Punjabi Darbar of New York and Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh
