Shah Rukh Enthralls Indians In Trinidad

INDOlink Trinidad Bureaue; August 7, 1999 - For the near sold-out audience on Friday night at the Queen's Park Savannah, the performance of Bollywood sensation Shah Rukh Khan was a show to remember, filled with what he called "bacchanal."

The versatile talents of the man regarded as the Amitabh Bachan of the 1990s came out as Khan gave a little bit of everything from that familiar dance sequence on top of the moving train in the award-winning movie Dil Se to an informal speech in which he urged the young fans to appreciate their mothers.

Khan, who lost his mother some years ago, urged his young audience "to be nice to mothers, they are important," he said. "I have none and I miss her," he added getting a nod of appreciation from Prime Minister Basdeo Panday.

Reserved tickets at $500 did not seem to have a negative impact on sales. On Friday night at the Savannah, it was a full house with a reserved section accommodating both the young and the old, including the most exquisitely attired women clad in expensive subcontinental garb.

Those who looked the part of Bollywood starlets included Oma Panday, in a royal blue sari; Helen Humphrey, radiant in a sequined outfit; and Anna Mohammed, wife of SM Jaleel's chairman, Dr Aleem Mohammed, in an elaborately-decorated beige gharara.

The D Rampersad Indian Art Orchestra began the show with a repertoire of popular film songs, followed by Devanand Gatoo and the dynamic Shiv Shakti Dancers led by Michael Salickram. After singer Chatan Anand actress Juhi Chawla appeared. Around 9.30 the former Miss India, in dramatic style, came out from a covered box which was lowered onstage.

Dressed in a purple cape, Chawla doffed this to reveal a stunning silver ensemble. Known for her classical dancing skills, she showed seductive moves appreciated wholeheartedly by the large male turn-out. "You are a very warm and wonderful audience, so polite and so kind," she told the audience after her performance.

Juhi's appearance was followed by singer Sweta Shetty. And then Khan came onstage by bursting through a screen. The crowd went wild.

But it was not until 11 pm that the crowd got the best of both worlds when Khan and Chawlabegan a medley of songs. The very popular "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" number kicked off the romantic segment followed by songs from Darr, Ishk, Dil To Pagal Hai and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The show ended around 1.15 am.
