Indian Maid in Kuwait Murdered

Source: AFP; Aug. 18, 1999

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 18 (AFP) - A Kuwaiti woman is in custody for further investigation following the bludgeoning to death of her Indian maid, newspapers reported Wednesday.

The Kuwaiti informed police of the death on Monday of 37-year-old Shajella Mari Dura, after finding her lying in a pool of blood with deep injuries to her head inflicted by a hard object, the Arab Times said.

Dura's hand was tightly clenched with hair in it, suggesting she had violently resisted the attack, the newspaper said.

The murder comes only days after a Kuwaiti man was detained for the torture and beating to death of his family's Sri Lankan maid.

There are hundreds of thousands of Asian women working in Kuwait, mainly as domestic servants, earning a monthly wage of up to 50 dinars (165 dollars).
