Cleveland, Ohio - Eight scientists of Indian origin were inducted as Fellows of ASM International (formerly the American Society for Metals) during the Materials Week '95 held in Cleveland, Ohio on October 31, 1995. ASM International, the largest materials society with about 46,000 members worldwide, established the honor of Fellow to recognize members for distinguished contributions in the field of materials science and engineering. The scientists and their award citations are:

Dr. Ashok Kumar, supervisory metallurgist and team leader, U.S. Army/Corps of Engineers, Champaign, IL. For advancement of science and technology of materials through invention and application of ceramic anodes as corrosion protection and ceramic compounds for vitrification of leaded paint.

Prof. Subhash Mahajan, professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. For outstanding contributions in understanding the deformation behavior of metals and electronic materials.

Dr. Kalathur S.V.L. Narasimhan, vice president, Hoeganaes Corporation, Riverton, NJ. For advancing and applying the technologies of magnetic materials and ferrous alloy powders, for maintaining technological leadership by motivation, and for developing interdisciplinary approaches to solving problems in particulate materials processing.

Dr. Krishnamurti (Ken) Natesan, senior metallurgist, Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL. For outstanding research resulting in the development of new and improved alloy compositions and protective coatings for use in advanced nuclear and fossil energy systems.

Dr. Chandra Shekhar Pande, section head, Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC. For pioneering experimental and theoretical contributions towards the understanding of a variety of phenomena in materials - from grain growth and workhardening in metals to flux pinning in superconductors.

Dr. Subhash C. Singhal, manager, Fuel Cell Technology, Westinghouse Science & Technology Center, Pittsburgh, PA. For outstanding contributions to and management of research, development, and commercialization of advanced materials and coatings for different energy conversion technologies including fuel cells, gas turbines, and coal gasification systems.

Prof. C. Suryanarayana, associate director, Institute for Materials and Advanced Processes, University of Idaho, Moscow, ID. For contributions to the synthesis, characterization, and elucidation of the nature of nanostructure, crystalline, quasicrystalline, and amorphous phases produced by rapid solidification and mechanical alloying and their structure-property correlations.

Prof. Krishna M. Vedula, department executive officer, Materials Science and Engineering Department, Iowa State University, Ames, IA. For significant contributions to the development of intermetallic alloys and for outstanding leadership in innovative educational approaches and industrial interactions.
