UCLA vice chancellor of research programs Dr. C. Kumar N. Patel will be
presented with the 1996 National Medal of Science, America's highest
scientific honor by President Bill Clinton during ceremonies at the
White House later this summer.
In a White House news release President Clinton described Patel as one of "the nation's champions of research and innovation." Patel will be one of four scientists to receive the scientific honour, America's version of the Nobel Prize, for their leadership and originality.
Patel earned his bachelor's degree in telecommunications from the College of Engineering, Pune; before coming to the United States where he finished his master's and Ph.D degrees in electrical engineering from the Stanford University. He worked with AT&T Bell Laboratories for 32 years and moved to UCLA in 1992.
