Indo-American Wins Patent for Oil Exploration Technology

July, 12, 1997 - Dr. J.J. Solanki, a researcher at Mobile Oil Corporation, made a new discovery in oil exploration technology, for which he was granted a key patent. This achievement is very significant because for the first time in over four decades that reliable data can be acquired using land vibrators.

In oil exploration, vibrators have been used for onshore exploration for over four decades. The vibrations are dependent on the pilot sweep, frequency modulated wave, specified by the Geophysicist. The seismic data is then acquired in one of the phaselocks; and they are baseplate phaselock, reaction mass phaselock or grounforce phaselock. The seismic data that is recorded is then correlated with the pilot sweep. Dr. Solanki conclusively demonstrated that severe phase distortions occurred using these methods. The three methods yielded different looking seismic data when acquired over the same ground surface. The resulting subsurface image was therefore always erroneous.

Dr. Solanki then demonstrated a procedure where these phase distortions in the acquired seismic data were eliminated. This data can subsequently be processed to obtain the correct image of the subsurface. This was a very significant discovery because for over four decades oil companies have obtained phase distorted data at the expense of billions of dollars.

The subject of the Patent number 04899321, 02-27-90, is "METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DETERMINING THE SOURCE SIGNATURE OF LAND VIBRATORS".
