SAN JOSE, CA - Writer Chitra Divakaruni and Hewlett-Packard software executive Radha Basu, were among 13 named to the "Women of Achievement" award at the Fairmont Hotel here Sept. 21. This was the first time in 15 years that Indo-Americans have won the award. The awards ceremony, which honors women leaders in Santa Clara County, was sponsored by the Women’s Fund, among other groups. The San Jose Mercury News co-hosted the event.
Divakaruni is also a creative writing teacher at Foothill College and was honored in the arts category. Her recently published book, "Arranged Marriage", is making some best-seller lists and has been nominatedfor awards.
Basu, general manager for international software at Hewlett-Packard, has worldwide responsibility for customer software development and project services. She is a founding member of Maitri, a support group for battered women of South Asian descent and supports Arpana Research and Charities Trust in rural Madhuban. The two were picked from a nomination list of 103.
