Pakistani-American Running for California Governor

By: Gary Fitleberg

Sacramento, CA; August 12, 2003 - A Pakistani-American was one of 158 individuals who filed to run for the recall election for California Governor in a long list that includes actor Arnold Schwartznagger, billboard model Angelyne, comedian Gallegher, political pundit Arianna Huffington as well as a cast of characters that includes a used car salesman.

Mohammed Arif, a businessman and resident of L.A., is married with no children.

Arif received a B.A. in commerce and M.A. in Economics from Punjab University in Pakistan.

Arif is no stranger to politics unlike Arnold Schwartznagger. His political career highlight includes Organizer for the Pakistan People’s Party during the late 1980’s. He will run for California Governor as an Independent Party candidate.

“My agenda is to work for the common people – for everyone” Arif was quoted as saying in his political bid and campaign.

Candidates in California’s “Three Ring Circus” Recall Election for Governor completed document filing with the county registrars before Saturday at 5 p.m.

There are various ways to place a name on the ballot, but many filing for the recall took the similar route – submitting signatures of 65 registered voters from their party and county and paying a $3,500 fee.

At this rate, the fees alone may generate an offset to California’s budget crisis and crunch for cash.

Democrats and Republicans could avoid the fee by submitting 10,000 signatures. Up to 150 signatures could be required of minor candidates hoping to avoid the fee.

Qualification for the ballot is contingent on the verification of signatures by county officials. Secretary of State Kevin Shelley’s office must then process the fee and certify the candidates. A final list of candidates was expected to be released Wednesday.
