India Development and Relief Fund is a tax-exempt organization under the
U.S. Internal revenue Code Section 501 (c)(3). It aims to support the
grassroots and non-government organizations (NGOs) involved in serving the
most disadvantaged, impoverished, illiterate, poor and needy people.
IDRF was founded in 1978 by Dr. Vinod Prakash, a World Bank
economist from 1971-81. He received his Ph.D. from MIT.
Dr. Prakash, in founding the IDRF, crusaded the non-resident
Indians to actively find solution to the problems of poverty,
illiteracy, malnutrition and natural disasters facing the
Indian masses. As a selfless social worker and a visionary,
Dr. Prakash has dedicated his life to the IDRF cause. IDRF, since
its modest beginnings, has grown as a non-profit, tax-exempt
organization managed entirely by a group of motivated volunteers.
IDRF has so far distributed over $800,000 to grassroots and
charitable organizations in India.

The name IDRF reflects our interest in the interaction and
convergence of development and relief work, particularly in
relation to the needs and welfare of the poor. As such, IDRF
has a broad focus and does not restrict its activities to any
set of projects. The projects with which IDRF is involved at
any particular time, will always reflect our pledge to:
- Create self help, rather than "welfare dependence"
- Serve economically and socially disadvantaged people
irrespective of caste, sect, region or religion
- Operate, manage and monitor project activities without
any overhead costs
Typically IDRF projects range from building schools for the
needy children, orphanages and rehabilitation centers for
disaster victims, to urban slums and tribal area development
schemes. The project areas may be quite diverse, but all likely
will address, social and economic issues. For a representative

Yes. This is precisely an inherent strength od IDRF and the source of its steady
growth. We attach utmost importance to the NGOs' accountability and integrity. We select NGOs with proven track records only. Furthermore, IDRF's President, Dr. Vinod Prakash, who has been living in USA for more than 30 years and has been visiting India almost every year. Since his retirement from the World Bank in 1988, he has been volunteering virtually all his time for IDRF.

- An automatic transfer scheme in which donors
authorize monthly contributions to IDRF directly from
their checking account. This hassle-free scheme is designed

- Stocks/Bonds
- You may donate the stocks/bonds to IDRF, and avoid the capital gain tax and also deduct their market value from your taxable income as allowed under law. We shall be pleased to help you in the paper work.
- Gift Certificate:
- Gift certificates can be used in lieu of cash
for purchases in grocery stores such as Lucky and Safeway.
5% of your bill will be donated by these stores to IDRF

Details of some of the projects.
- Akhil Bharathiya Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram, Madhya Pradesh:
- Supports more than 6000 community projects such as
dispensary, school, adult education and craft training
in 17,200 tribal villages throughout India.
- Sewa Bharati, Sewa Dham, Delhi:
- Helping the urban poor in 125 slum colonies in Delhi,
Sewa benefits about 180,000 people through its service
projects. Recipient of Delhi State Award for the
Outstanding Children Welfare Organization in 1991.
- Devi Ahilyabai Smarak Samiti, Maharastra:
- Focuses on the integrated development of the tribal
women. Provides non-formal education and runs girls
hostel, library, homeopathic clinic and family programs.
Managed by women volunteers.
- Vikas Bharati, Bihar:
- Engaged in integrated human development through
non-formal education, appropriate technology,
agricultural development, etc. Recipient of 1991
Indira Gandhi Vrikshamitra Award.
- Girivasi Vanavasi Seva Parakalpa, Uttar Pradesh:
- Operates 11 schools and dorms for tribal boys and
girls. Runs 2 medical clinics, Sanskrit school and
social forestry training center.
- Saraswati Shiksha Mandir, Uttar Pradesh:
- Children from 8 villages attend this school
funded entirely by a NRI.
- Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society, Tamil Nadu:
- Runs daycare centers, schools, maternity and
healthcare facilities.
- Seva in Action, Karnataka:
- A women's organization providing preventive childhood
disability and rehabilitation services to handicapped
children.
- Muni Seva Ashram, Gujarat:
- Runs a 44-bed rural hospital, a residential vocation
center for mentally retarded women and other community
services.
- Apang Parivar Kalyana Kendra, Gujarat:
- Provides medical care, education and vocational training
for physically disabled.
- Vatsalya Hostel, Maharastra:
- An adoption center providing home for abandoned infants
and children.
- Jammu Kashmir Sahyata Samithi, Jammu & Kashmir:
- Supports displaced people and victims of political violence.
- Peerit Sewa Parakalpa Samithi, Punjab:
- Helps victims of terrorism, provides medical care and
vocational rehabilitation.
- Manav Seva Prathisthan, West Bengal:
- Serves tribal population through hostels, schools,
dispensaries, agricultural research and dairy farms.
- Vatsalya Sindhu & Vaidehi Ashram, Andhra Pradesh:
- Provides shelter, food, education and medical facilities
to destitute boys and girls.
