Song! The night was dark and cold, Dark clouds silently rolled, The world had gone to sleep, Gently the clouds did weep. The Silence was overpowering, The very air was disheartening Drops of rain splashed onto the ground, It was damp and wet all around. The steady onslaught of liquid pain, All existence was smothered by the rain. All hope seemed to be lost, All dreams overcome by the cold frost. All of mankind darkness had embraced, A lonely path did the angels trace. Suddenly ,somewhere, out of nowhere, A beauteous melody rent the air, A beautiful Voice rendered a song, Lovely ecstasy, sweet and long. Enchanting, captivating, A lonesome light, Courageously against the gloom did it fight. Briefly it defied the melancholy's might , For a brief moment it illuminated the night. The clouds shrank back in defeat, The moon peeped in to applaud the feat, For a brief moment the darkness disappeared, For a brief moment the sky was cleared, Joy broke out all over the Universe, Lifted finally was the nights' curse. Thus was the song that spread over hill and dale, Thus was the song of the great Nightingale. From near and afar, all tried to hear, Everywhere everyone strained their ear, All creatures were held absolutely spellbound, By the splendid rhapsody of sound. The haunting tune tugged at the heart, In this song was reached perfection of art. All creation was magically transported, To a wondrous world the nightingale had created. Where music was all around, Yet so devoid of any sound. Where everything happened as if in a dream, Where Utopia reached its extreme, The land seemed to blend with the sky, Hope reached out tall and high, All dreams All desire came true for an instant, All time seemed to stop for a moment, Thus was the song that spread over hill and dale, Thus was the song of the great nightingale, So pure was the song in content, Though no one knew what it meant, The song came through straight from the heart, Pierced all emotions like a keen dart. So still was the world in the trance, No one dared even to throw a glance, Lest the reverie be broken, And lose heaven. Vivid and clear were the mind's images, Colourful and formless, of various visages Thrilling romantic beautiful creations, A dance of colour, a frenzy of happy passions, Thus was the song that spread over hill and dale, Thus was the song of the great Nightingale. But this joy did not last forever, The night returned in an intense fever, No longer did the fire burn, To its repose did the Nightingale return, Darkness came back, swiftly and steadily, No longer lasted the happy melody, Peace and quiet once more reigned, Gently once more it stifled and rained. The Darkness extinguished all existence again, Quickly returned the suffocating pain, But the song remains embedded in minds, No matter how hard the night grinds, No man shall now lose hope or faith, For somewhere in the depths of darkness, There is always a nightingale. And no matter what the storm or gale, All life will remember the magical song, For, Thus was the song of the great Nightingale! By: Anand Shekhar.
