Amma's(Mom's) Green Chicken

Ingredients:

  • Chicken   -   2 lb. ( 1 kilo ) approx
  • Tomatoes (chopped)   -   2-3
  • Onions   -   2 large
  • Ginger   -   1/4 inch long piece
  • Cilantro Leaves   -   One bunch
  • Serrano/Jalapeno Peppers finely chopped   -   2
  • Red Chilli Powder   -   1/2 tsp.
  • Cinnamon   -   1Crushed sticks or powder
  • Cloves   -   5 or 6
  • Turmeric Powder   -   1/2 tsp
  • Cumin Powder   -   1 tbsp.
  • Garam Masala   -   1 tbsp. (OPTIONAL
  • Vegetable oil (or butter)   -   2-3 tbsp.
  • Salt   -   According to taste

Method:

1. Finely chop the onions. Heat oil in large deep pan and add onions. Add cinnamon, ginger(finely chopped), cloves, and peppers (chopped). Fry on medium-high heat till onions turn golden brown. 2. Add powders, and fry for another minute. 3. At the same time, make paste of Cilantro and red chilli powder in blender using water. Paste need not be very thick, but don't make it too dilute. Remember, red chilli powder is *NOT* needed if serrano peppers are used. Quantity of both peppers and chilli powder can be suited to taste, and omitted completely the next time if it turns out too spicy the first time.. :) 4. Add paste to onion-spices-powder mixture, and fry for a couple of minutes. 5. Add chopped tomatoes and salt. Mix tomatoes in paste, and cook on high heat for 3-4 minutes (till tomatoes are kind of mushy). 6. Add chicken pieces, and a glass of water. Bring to boil (takes about a minute or two). 7. Once boiling, turn down the heat to low, and let it cook for about 40 minutes. Stir occassionally. 8. Invite Yatin for dinner! :)
