Boil the dal with 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric and set aside. Wash and cut the vegetables into small pieces. Boil with 1/4 teaspoon turmeric and some salt. Set aside. Mix together the boiled dal, cooked vegetables and the ground paste. Add some water if too thick, and simmer for a few minutes. Add a little tamarind juice to the mixture, if desired. Heat the oil and when hot, add the mustard seeds, black gram and curry leaves. Pour the seasonings into the "kootu". Serve hot with chapathi or rice.
