| | Ginger Wanamaker and her best friend, Irene Fong, are staying at Ginger´s grandparents´ home in southern Indiana. Grandpa George and the girls go for a ride in his classic MG sports car. They stop at the Brown´s, and Harriet gives the girls a tour of the historic old house, especially the hiding places for the escaped slaves of the Underground Railroad. This is a delightful children´s adventure about the Underground Railroad and the mystery of finding an underground tunnel at Grandpa and Grandma´s house with the enthusiastic help of Laird, a wire fox terrier. Ginger makes an exciting discovery in a token that probably belonged to an escaped slave. The characters are vivid and lovable, and the tension builds to an exciting climax. Gerald Wunsch has included a section in the back of the book called "Learning More." Information about wire fox terriers, the country of Suriname, the MG T-series sports car, buffalo nickels, slavery in America and the Underground Railroad are all discussed. There is a listing of web sites for more information about the Underground Railroad that will be fun to explore. Irene Joslin´s whimsical illustrations add visual excitement to the story.
