Colombo, Jan. 20 (NNN): Warning that the current truce was under threat of collapse due to the power struggle between the president and the prime minister, Tamil Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka have appealed to the international community to save the country's peace process.
Thamilselvan, who leads the Tigers' political wing, accused Chandrika Kumaratunga of arbitrarily taking over government ministries, which should be controlled by Ranil Wickramasinghe.
The legislature and executive were now heavily polarised, he said, and were diametrically opposed in a vicious power struggle. He said this had left the government apparatus meant to push forward peace negotiations in a shambles.
He was speaking at a meeting of international and local donors at the Tigers headquarters in Kilinochchi.
Thamilselvan told donors that ordinary civilians were not enjoying the benefits of the two-year old ceasefire. He said it was vital that the international community exerted pressure on the Sri Lankan leadership so that peace talks could start again.
Thamilselvan described the international community as the only force that could now bring the Sri Lankan Government back to the negotiating table.
