Cab Secy to head top-level panel to monitor coastal security Email this page

New Delhi, June 18 (PTI) A high-level committee headed by Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar will regularly monitor the progress made in strengthening the coastal security apparatus put in place after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. The decision was taken at a meeting called by Defence Minister A K Antony and attended by National Security Advisor M K Narayanan and Defence Secretary Vijay Singh, apart from the Cabinet Secretary and the top brass of maritime security agencies.
"The high-level committee that has been set up under the Cabinet Secretary will meet frequently to review the coastal security situation," a Defence Ministry spokesperson said here after the meeting.

Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta, Defence Secretary Vijay Singh, Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, and Secretaries of Ministries such as Petroleum and Chief Secretaries of Coastal states would be the committee members, he said.

The meeting also discussed the progress made with regard to previous decisions for fast track acquisition for Navy and Coast Guard, including 80 fast interceptor crafts, off-shore patrol vessels, and surveillance aircraft and helicopters, he said.

"At the meeting, Antony asked the Navy and Coast Guard to optimally use their assets and force for coastal surveillance," the spokesperson added.
