MUMBAI: A plurality of Indians, around 36 percent, expects host country Brazil to be victorious in the final game of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, according to a new online study by global research company Ipsos.
As for the runner-up, Indians choose Brazil (13 percent), Spain (12 percent), Germany (12 percent), Argentina (10 percent), France (6 percent), Italy (6 percent), England (4 percent), Portugal (3 percent), Australia (3 percent), United States/ Belgium/ Mexico/ Chile at 2 percent and Uruguay/ Netherlands/ Colombia/ Japan/ Russia and South Korea all at 1 percent.
“Football fever has gripped India with 2014 FIFA World Cup soccer event underway in Brazil. Ipsos study indicates that more than 65 percent Indians have heard the buzz around the global mega sporting event,” said Biswarup Banerjee, Head Marketing Communications, Ipsos India.
A majority (78 percent) of global respondents have heard at least something about the upcoming World Cup in Brazil with 46 percent indicating they’ve heard something ( “a great deal” (22 percent), “a fair amount” (24 percent)) compared with 54 percent who have not heard much or anything (“a little bit” (32 percent) and “not heard anything at all” (22 percent)).
Those from Brazil (69 percent), the host country, are most likely to say they have heard “a great deal”, followed by those from Mexico (53 percent), Argentina (44 percent), Indonesia (43 percent), Belgium (34 percent), Saudi Arabia (32 percent), France (30 percent), and India (29 percent). One quarter or fewer are aware of the games from countries like, South Africa (26 percent), South Korea (23 percent), China (21 percent), Spain (19 percent), Poland (17 percent), Turkey (17 percent), Italy (15 percent), Japan (15 percent), Great Britain (13 percent), Egypt (12 percent), Germany (9 percent), Romania (8 percent), the United States (7 percent), Hungary (7 percent), Australia (6 percent), Sweden (6 percent), Canada (6 percent) and Russia (5 percent).
The Ipsos poll was conducted in May among 19,032 respondents in 26 countries, including: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the United States.
