Bangalore: One of India’s oldest educational academies, Punjab University will have a chair on world religions, sponsored by NRI’s, reports Alkesh Sharma of Times of India. This major step was taken after an incident which occurred on August 5th, where six persons were killed and three were brutally injured when a gunman opened fire in the Sikh Shrine on a Sunday. After witnessing this incident of crime, 147 NRI bodies across the globe have brought notice to the IOC. The IOC further wrote to Shivraj Patil, governer of Punjab to set up a chair in order to take necessary action. "US attacks were racial and targeted a particular community, we strongly condemn it. NRIs across the world have felt that there is a need to disseminate correct knowledge about Indian religions through some reliable channel. We have chosen PU to set up this chair after evaluating its past history of achievements," Vikram Bajwa, president of IOC told TOI. "We have urged the governor to intervene in this matter. This chair on world religions would be sponsored by NRIs. We have proposed an aid of Rs 20 lakh for the chair," he added. When the worshippers were shot at a Sikh Shrine in Oak Creek in Wincosin, U.S President, Barack Obama ordered that the country’s flag should be flown at half staff in all the government buildings, to express unanimity.
