Moscow, Nov 11 (AFP) Russian security forces killed five rebels in a special operation near the Chechen capital Grozny today, the Caucasus republic's interior ministry said, quoted by RIA Novosti news agency.
The ambush came only two days after police shot dead two alleged rebel leaders in an operation reportedly led by Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov.

The five were killed near the village of Serjen-Yurt, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) east of the republic's capital, said a ministry official quoted by RIA Novosti.

Four of the bodies have been identified and two were on a Russian wanted list, the official said.

There has been mounting violence throughout Russia's largely Muslim Northern Caucasus in recent months as Islamist militants wage an insurgency against the Moscow-backed local authorities.

Chechnya saw two separatist wars after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.
