New Delhi, Nov. 23 (NNN): Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee chaired an all-party meeting on Tuesday where the leaders of political parties agreed to ensure the smooth functioning of the forthcoming winter session Parliament.
The Speaker has had separate meetings with political leaders from all parties who have assured him they will not disrupt Parliament. The winter session of Parliament begins on December 1.

Chatterjee called the meeting with leaders of the ruling UPA and the opposition NDA to discuss ways to ensure the smooth functioning of Parliament. Rajya Sabha chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat presided over the meeting.

NCP For Regular UPA Meets: Meanwhile, asking Congress not to treat the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) as its "fiefdom", NCP today stepped up pressure for regular interaction among the coalition partners by appealing to the party to convene meetings of the UPA Coordination Committee at least once a month.

"The Congress should realise that it is not a one-party government. UPA meetings must be held once a month to discuss issues facing the country", said D P Tripathi, NCP's chief spokesperson.

Tripathi's comments came in the backdrop of reports that certain non-Congress constituents including the NCP were not happy over the way the coalition was being run by the Congress.

NCP had sometime back demanded that there should be consultations by the Congress, heading the coalition, with other constituents on major issues and appointments including those of the Governors.

Replying to a question, Tripathi today said his party has not been consulted still on the issue of appointment of governors.

The demand of the NCP has come ahead of the winter session of Parliament and close on the heels of Samajwadi Party, extending outside support to the UPA Governnment, asking the Congress-led coalition to mend ways or else should not take its support for granted.

Party sources said that there has been interaction between the NCP Chief Sharad Pawar and TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao and JMM leader Shibu Soren.

NCP leader and Union Minister Praful Patel also had interaction with Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran of the DMK.
