About 13.47 cr farmers covered under NAIS: Thomas Email this page

New Delhi, Nov 24 (PTI) The government today said about 1,347 lakh farmers have been covered under the National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS) since its inception in the 1999-2000 Rabi season.
About 1,347 lakh farmers over an area of 2,109 lakh hectares with an insured sum of Rs 1,48,258 crore have been covered, minister of state for consumer affairs, food and public distribution KV Thomas said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.

The participation of farmers has increased gradually from 105 lakh farmers during 2000-01 to 191 lakh farmers during 2008-09 under the NAIS, he added.

Similarly, under the Pilot Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (WBCIS), about 25 lakh farmers over an area of 34 lakh hectares with a sum insured of Rs 4,622 crore have also been covered since inception of the scheme in Kharif 2007, the minister added.
