The National Awards were announced in New Delhi a couple of weeks ago. Kerala swept the announcement with a record number of ten top awards! Tamil Cinema had a couple of bright spots, so to speak.

While Suresh Gopi and S.Balachendra Menon shared the best actor award, their own Malayalam superstar Mohan Lal, failed to score with his first real Tamil appearance, Iruvar. Iruvar was ignored both at the box-office and was almost eclipsed at the National awards too. It had too bright spots - Prakash Raj won the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance as Tamizh Selvan, loosely based on Muthuvel Karunanidhi and Santosh Sivan for keeping a good eye behind the camera, won the Best Cinematographer award.  That was not all for Santosh Sivan. His "The Terrorist" won the Rajat-Kamal for the best Tamil Feature film.
