Nothing particularly stops the flood of new faces into Kodambakkam at any time of year. Rain or shine, film strike or success, big budget or peanuts.. doesn't seem to matter to the young and fresh talent barging into tinsel town!. If you think 1997 was filled with new cine artists falling from the sky, left, right and center.. Welcome to 1998!.. Lots of fun ahead.. that's for sure!..
Not a household name yet.. aanal Raaman Abdhulla-vil pillaiyaar
kovil incident-ai yaaraalum marakka mudiyumaa? Olli kuchchi Vaiyaapuri (real name:
Ramakrishnan) was once teased by the people from his sondha oor for looking gorgeous like
Kamalahassan. Poor Vaiyapps, who could not understand that they were just joking,
ended up in Chennai, naayaa peiyya alang-ing, just to show up as a guy in a gumbal in some
of the films. Finally, when Raaman Abdhulla and Kaadhal
Palli came up big for him, even the critics had high praise for his work.
Even now after not seeing much money in films, he jokingly says "Vaazhkkai-la
Suvalakshmi-kku jodiyaa nadichchu putten. Verrenna vendi kidakku."
Sivappu Vadivelu ivar dhaano?.. The number of films that Vaiyapuri has signed since Raaman
Abdhulla should tell the story: Super Good Films' R.B.Choudhri's Jaali,
K.T.K. Kunjumon's Koteeswaran, the Mamooty starrer, Marumalarchchi,
Kamalahassan's Kaadhalaa Kaadhalaa, 'Sivashakthi' Pandian's Kaadhale
Nimmadhi, along side Vijay's Priyamudan, with
Karthik and Meena in Arichandra, and smaller films like Style,
Dhinamdhorum, Conductor Maapillai, Sollamale,
Surya's next Sandhippomaa? and much much more.. Vaiyapuri-kku
vaazhvu dhaan! :-)
'Ennakku thangai illai.. illai.. illai' yendru Rambha adiththu sonna kaalamellaam malai
yeri vittadhu.. Anandajyothi, or cinemavukk-aaga peyir maatriya Amulya, is indeed Rambha's
ondru vitta akka. It appears when Vijayalakshmi (Rambha) first came to Chennai to make it
big, she had stayed with Amulya and her family. Appuram periya aall aana piragu, Rambha
just turned her face and walked off basking in the glory of her success. Amulya, who was
studying +1 and learning Kuchipudi simultaneously, was lured into acting in the Telegu
film, Aranyam. Soon after, three more films in Kannada and
finally into the arms of tamil cinema, Amulya has completed work in Idhu dhaan
Kaadhal. There was word a while back that Amulya was supposed to star with
Karthik in a film, but all that info still remains sketchy. Ivarum avarai polla ulaththai
alli-naal tamil cinema thaangumaa?..
Master Panju Subbu.. It would be difficult not to know Panju Arunachalam in the
tamil film industry today. His excellent productions, stories, screenplays and dialogues
have been backbones to the success of hundreds of films in the past. Panju Arunachalam's
son, Panju Subbu has made his debut as dance choreographer for the K.Balachandar
production, Vidukadhai. In an effort to employ new artists to
increase the strength of the Padaippaalligal as a koottani, Agathiyan took it upon himself
to give Subbu a chance. Subbu has learned dance from Jayanthi Master and has choreographed
movements for the songs in Vidukadhai. Subbu has also been
signed to choreograph for his father's next production, Romance
with Abbas as hero, Director K.R.'s Kavalai Padaadhe Sagodhara,
with Pandiyarajan and Suvalakshmi (under the 'Subbu Films International banner, which
Panju Subbu himself produces) and Sandhosam with story and
dialogues by Agathiyan. Interestingly, that "Girija" nadigai has been
rumoured recently to be in love with Panju Subbu, with intentions of tying the knot very..
Singh.. Supposed to be the stunning hero for A.M.Ratnam's next production, Kaadhalar
Dhinam, to be directed by Kadhir. After looking through dozens and dozens of
photo albums of potential lover boys for his film, Kadhir found himself standing on the
road in Bangalore. That was where he spotted Kunaal Singh. Practically, all of Kunaal's
family members are part of the military. He was actually in Bangalore to thethu-fy his
body to join the military. When Kadhir offered him a chance, Kunaal was more than ready to
grab the offer. He had quite a lot going for him, besides A.M.Ratnam and Kadhir.
Cinematography by P.C.Sreeram and Music by A.R.Rahman should give Kunaal the added
strength that he needs to survive his first film, along with help from the leading lady,
(northie varavu) Sonali Bendre...
the world of Maharashtra and we discover the downpour of heroines: Madhuri, Mamta, Urmila,
Shilpa, Sonali, Kajol etc. etc. yendru oru periya pattallame irukkiradhu. From this
world, T. Rajendar kandeduththa vairam dhaan Sneha. For his next
big project Monisha, which is still under tremendous hush-hush,
T.R. has signed this Maharastrian girl, who is currently a B.Com student with lots of
interest in dance and music. Sneha spent most of her time performing in cultural
programs and never really gave much thought to making it big in another forum, including
films. Once T.R. offered her the role, Sneha-vukku thalai kaal puriyavillai.. After
all, she has high praise for T.R.: "Aamaa, thamizh-la 'love'-na Rajendar-ji dhaan
authority-yaame?" It appears that T.R. has caught another kili named Nagma
Khan (more on her soon). But Sneha's entrance, for some reason, has been
well publicized that soon, any man/woman walking on the road, might be able to recognize
Kunjumon.. Sketchy information about this chinna meesai vaiththa magan of periya
meesai vaiththa appa Producer K.T.Kunjumon. It was announced almost a year back that
Kotteswaran would K.T.K.'s next production, in which he would
introduce his son Ebi as the hero. There was word that Kunjumon was trying to sign
Nagma's youngest sister, Jothika and Kajol's younger sister to star along with Ebi, but it
appears that Simran has won out this time. Ebi did not appear shy during one of the
photo sessions for the film with Simran. Meanwhile, Kunjumon is having trouble
dealing with the fact that Ratchagan did not do as well as
expected at the box office. With worries mounting, KTK has put off beginning the
shooting of Koteeswaran until February 1998.
Rai.. Technically, Ice should be incredibly worried that both her tamil debut, Iruvar
and Hindi debut, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, ooththi-keech!.. But then
again, her salary has gone up to Rs. 1 Crore even after two flops. It's true that she
dances and acts well, but producer-oda panna pai dhaane kizhigiradhu!.. Regardless, Aish
does have a lot at stake in Director Shankar's Jeans with
Prasanth in the lead. Even though she is not new anymore to tamil cine field, hit padam
kodukaadha varaikkum, experience illaadhavargal-in koottaththil serka vendiyadhu dhaan!.
Actually, Rajeswari is hardly a newcomer to the tamil film industry. Just
that all of us do not remember seeing her debut film Chinna Thaai,
which flew out of theaters as soon as it arrived. At that time, she was known as
Padmashree to the world. Leaving the past behind, Rajeswari tried her luck once
again when Director Cheran was said to be looking for a artist to play Murali's
handicapped sister in Porrkaalam. Despite the fact that
Cheran and Producer Kaja Moidheen liked Rajeswari as soon as they saw her, they did put
her through a grueling make-up test where her face, hands and legs were kari pooshi-fied
and her hair drenched in oil to give the traditional village girl look. After the
test, of course, both Cheran and Moidheen were convinced that she was their 'Panjavarnam'
in Porrkaalam. Cheran changed her name from Padmashree to
Rajeswari, in hopes that her luck would change as well. Porkaalam
was received so well in Chennai and surrounding areas that Rajeswari was immediately
offered and signed 8 tamil films: all sister roles. Her most significant sis role is
currently in Moovendhar (where her death changes her muradan
brother Saratkumar to become a kinder, gentler person.) Lots more on the way for
this rather stunningly beautiful actress who vaguely resembles Anu Hassan in Indhira
in certain camera angles, at least in Porrkaalam..
Dixit.. Ippo varaar appo varaar yendru, Madhuri Dixit tamil cinema-vukku oru
vazhiyaaga vandhu vittaar!.. After making a trip to Mumbai and relating the entire story
of the film, Engineer, Director Gandhi Krishna was able to
convince Madhuri to act in his film. For quite a long period, Madhuri had avoided
doing any and all South Indian films for personal reasons. The fact that she liked
Gandhi Krishna's story and just knowing that he had been Director Shankar's assistant for
all of Shankar's films so far.. was enough reason for Madhuri to sign the film.
After a long discussion over Madhuri's salary, she compromised on the amount when she
heard that Arvind Swamy, beaming from his success in Minsaara Kanavu,
would play the lead in Engineer. Above all, Madhuri has
requested to speak the dubbing voice in the film (after all, Madhuri oru maadhiri-yaa
tamil pesinaalum.. at least tamil pesugiraare!)..
Prema.. A rather quite entrance by Prema into tamil films considering her debut film in Kannada directed by M.S.Rajasekhar was a major hit. Her debut happened when she was busy studying for her B.Sc. in Computer Science and after that, there was no looking back. Next came Director Rajasekar's Om which won special mention by critics across the board and brought Prema into the big leagues. Her performance in the Telegu film, Namma Ooru Mandhaara Hoovu, was what caught the attention of Muktha V. Srinivasan, who was desperately seeking a heroine to star in his son, Muktha V. Sundhar's film, Kanngalin Vaarththaigal. In the meantime, most tamil cinema fans would have caught a few glimpses of her in the dubbed film, Mahaan, the original in Malayalam which went 'bondi' in Kerala. Today, Prema feels that she is in the top of her world as she prays and hopes that Kanngalin Vaarththaigal would launch her career in tamil cinema. Interestingly, Muktha V. Srinivasan's comment that Prema is at par with Savithri and many others in her acting talent and cooperation with the film crew.. has her in seventh heaven..
Khan aka Mumtaz.. Either she is desperate to make it into
tamil films or she just REALLY REALLY likes T.Rajendar. Sonnadhukku ellam thalai-yai
'seri'-yendru aatti-konde seigiraar.. Two piece swim suit-aa?.. No problem..
Swimming pool-a swimming theriyaama kudhikkanumaa?.. No problem.. Nagma Khan is basically
bending over backwards because she considers T.Rajendar a 'periya director' and that this
might be her biggest shot to make it in Kodambakkam. Moreover, she is currently
pleading with Rajendar to keep her name: Nagma Khan, even though T.R. is worried that we
already have a "Nagma" in tamil. (She might become Mumtaz,
after all!) T.Rajendar's Monisha's beginning or end
credits will eventually reflect the name change if Nagma Khan can coax T.R.
otherwise. Irukkura kavarchi-kku innum oru puyal.. innum oru Nagma?..
Praveen Gandhi... A Chennai-yite all his life, Praveen Gandhi has basically
breathed cinema ever since his youth. He 'kottai vittu"-fied his chance to go
to college in a 'veri' to achieve something truly remarkable in tamil cinema. After
some tough times, Gandhi obtained an incredible chance to work as Director Priyadarshan's
assistant. It was at this time that K.T.Kunjumon was nagging Priyadarshan for a
chance to direct one of his productions. Caught in committments and hassles way over
his head, Priyadarshan recommended his assistant, Praveen Gandhi, as a good choice to
direct Kunjumon's proposed project. The Gandhi-Kunjumon koottani brought about a
so-so venture in Rakshakan (which is Gandhi's debut film).
Despite the fact that Gandhi's debut did not provide anything new and exciting, he
seems tremendously happy in his interviews and claims that Rakshakan
was very well received by the masses. Praveen Gandhi also gloats about how Rakshakan
was way ahead of its time and should be a film that should be taken at least 10 years from
now. All the gloating and pride aside, Praveen Gandhi's immediate future remains
relatively unclear. Except for a project planned with K.T.Kunjumon and A.R.Rahman
(after Kunjumon completes Koteeswaran) and one project for an
outside company, which has not been confirmed yet, Praveen Gandhi's career in 1998,
kadavul dhaan 'rakshakan'-aaga irukka vendum.
A newcomer, who is not actually a newcomer to Chennai-yites. She has starred in T.V.
serials, Suzhal and Oviyam, which have
earned her a good name. Her mother, Sushma directs her directorial debut film, Uyirodu
Uyiraaga, in which Richcha stars along with Ajeethkumar. At one time,
Richcha had saththiyam pannu-fied that she would not act in a tamil film, but adhu ellam
ippo kaaththoda pochchi.. She has gone one step further and decided that she would not
accept any roles in T.V. serials until Uyirodu Uyiraaga has been
we are in the subject of daughter, we might discuss the mother as well!.. Sushma,
whose directorial debut, Uyirodu Uyiraaga, has almost reached
completion and awaits release, indeed has a very good film/drama background. She
began singing in All-India Radio when she was just seven years old and continued to learn
dance and singing through her teen years. As time passed, Sushma got involved in a
Delhi theater company where she presented dramas in Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi. In
1977, Sushma found herself settling down with her family in Chennai and started a theater
group called "Ab Udhay" which presented plays in Hindi, English and Tamil.
Things changed dramatically after Directors Singetham Srinivasa Rao and L.V.Prasad
constantly urged Sushma to pursue direction. After serving as an assistant to Balu
Mahendra while he shot Sadma in Hindi, Sushma continued serving
under T.Rama Rao, Yash Chopra and several big names in the film industry. In
Kodambakkam, it is a very small world for women for the most part: you can actually
count and name all the women who have significantly moved up in the field (besides
B.R.Vijayalakshmi & Suhasini.) In general, it is truly satisfying to see Indian
women like Sushma move up the ranks to become a director of a tamil film. If not for
anybody else, we hope that 1998 will be a golden year for debutant director Sushma, as we
anxiously await the release of Uyirodu Uyiraaga (which is based
on a real incident that happened over 7 years ago.)
Preetha Vijaykumar... Maybe she will be the first one in the family to have some luck in the cinema industry. All three of her sisters have had only moderate luck in Kodambakkam: Kavitha (who starred in Cooli), Vanitha (who starred in Chandralekha and Maanikkam and the youngest, Sridevi (who continues to do child and young girl roles). To add to the woes, there is Arunkumar, whose recent Ganga Gowri, Kaathirundha Kaadhal felt flat at the box office. It appears that Arun will have to be atleast 40 something like his dad Vijaykumar to get somewhere in life. With this kind of track record within the family, Preetha might be the saving grace for Vijaykumar and Manjula. Preetha happened to accompany her mother to one of the shootings in Andrapradesh during her school holidays. What she ended up with is quite amazing. Director Raviraja Binny Shetty was so thrilled with her looks that he immediately signed her to star with Vineeth in the Telegu film, Rukumani Kalyaanam. Rukku has done so well in Andrapradesh that they have started selling Rukumani brand dhavanis and vallayals in the market (A la Avvai Shanmughi?). Obviously, Preetha is anxious and excited beyond belief. She currently stars with Surya in Sandhippoma? (which will officially be her debut film in Tamil.) At one time, it was strongly rumoured that Ambika's & Radha's brother Vishva would debut in the film with Simran as his jodi. Don't know if any of this still holds true or even if Sandhippoma? is a double hero-heroine subject! (There's a bit on this later :-)
Mohan Paiyanur... The behind-the-scenes man who is planning on coming to the fore front in 1998. Mohan Paiyanur has served as Director Priyadarshan's assistant for over 40 films. It was only under the influence and advice of cameraman Thangar Pachchan that Mohan Paiyanur was first introduced to "Sivashakthi" Pandian. Intially, he was not very excited about joining "Sivashakthi" Pandian's crew. But when Vaanmadhi ran to packed houses in 1996, Mohan was willing to experiment by serving as Agathiyan's assistant director in Kaadhal Kottai. Pandian has actually promised Mohan a separate film to direct soon. As a result of the success of Kaadhal Kottai and the proposed projects in Kaalamellam Kaadhal Vaazhga, Mohan has faithfully waited for Pandian to make way for his debut. Even now, Mohan Paiyanur still remains optimistic after serving as an assistant director to Indhiran in Kaadhale Nimmadhi (the fourth straight successful production by "Sivashakthi" Pandian.) Interestingly, Paiyanur is no 'jujubi' to any film industry in India. He has served under Priyadarshan in just about every language including Malayalam (Odaradhu Ammavaa Aall Ariyam), Hindi (Gardish, Muskuraahath, and still to be released, Kabhi Na Kabhi), Telegu (Nirnayam, Kandeevam) and several tamil films with and away from Priyadarshan, including Chinna Mani Kuyile (shooting stopped half-way), Gopurangal Saaivadhillai and Siraichchaalai. Currently, Mohan is busy directing the remake of Kaadhal Kottai in Malayalam and excitedly says, 'adhu mudindhadhum aduththu oru thamizh padam dhaan.' Hopefully "Sivashakthi" Pandian will keep the promise he made two years ago and Paiyanur will make his directorial debut in 1998.
Krishna... Director Shankar is proud beyond words that this assistant
of his has finally ventured into making his own film. Shankar makes no efforts to
hide that he is sincerely happy and proud that Gandhi Krishna is making his directorial
debut in Engineer. He described Gandhi Krishna to be the
'menmaiyaana' type and one who loves the arts: literature, poetry and story scripts.
Krishna is a calm person who could easily solve any problem just by listening to
people carefully and honestly. But all of this is best summed up by Shankar's final
comment: "En team-la irundhu aduththa director vandhaachchu-garadhu sandhosam-aa
irukku. Padam varattum.. paarungal. En Gandhi-yin kadhai moththa India-voda
gavanaththai-yum eerkkum." With blessings and support coming from his
guru, Gandhi Krishna has a lot at stake in this venture. Besides Arvind Swamy and
Madhuri Dixit providing the glitz and glamour with the excellent still session put
together by Krishna, Producer Ramachandra Rao has an ensemble that has Kodambakkam
literally 'vaai-yai pollandhu-fying' in awe: dialogues by Sujatha, lyrics by Vairamuthu,
music by A.R.Rahman, cinematography by Jeeva and special effects by Venki. Since
Engineering is Krishna's subject in real life, he has appropriately given such a title to
the film. Additionally, Gandhi Krishna has kept the story completely under wraps.
Sujatha and Vairamuthu only discuss the film in 'poodaga' fashion without giving
too much away. In all probability, Deepavali 1998 or Pongal 1999 might provide us
some wonders in story-telling (sci-fi style) that we have never seen before in tamil
cinema, with special thanks to Gandhi Krishna. If things are going as scheduled, the
Engineer pada poojai should have occurred on January 23, 1998
and shooting should have begun on January 25, 1998.
Kutti News on some more Kunjugal
Speaking of R.V.U., we cannot forget that there are indeed two heroines (one debuts) in his next film to hit theaters. Udhaya and Rasika star in R.V.Udhayakumar's Chinna Ramasami, Periya Ramaswami, which might hit theaters for Pongal 1998. Udhaya, an avid participant in yoga and yoga related activities, plays Jayaram's pair, while Rasika (whose debut film Poonjolai, has probably gone into the pits by now!) stars as R.V.U's pair in the film. Rasika is also busy finishing up Kabadi Kabadi with Pandiyarajan, Bhagavath Singh with Napolean, Manasukkul Varalaamaa with Abbas & Ravali, Anbulla Kaadhalukku with Mohan (yes, pazhaiya kaalaththu Mohan dhaan!) and managed to successfully make her debut in tamil cinema after almost two years, in Udhavikku Varalaamaa and Kaadhale Nimmadhi during Pongal 1998.
Laksi, who currently stars in Kaadhal Gramam
and Ini Ellam Sugame also belongs to a military family.
Laksi is very lucky and unique in one aspect. She has a variety of names in the
different film industries. For example: Sonu in Telegu and Preethi in Malayalam and of
course, Laksi in Tamil. Market-ukku thagundhaa maadhiri peyir-ai maatri
kollkiraar.. puzhaiththu kollvaar polla!..
opportunities come to people in some of the wierdest ways and it did for Shwetha
(appears that they might have changed her name to Suveha). Her
brother Rajini kumar's friend, Abimanyu received a chance to direct a film and Suveha was
the first person he thought of to play the heroine in the film. He immediately asked
Suveha if she would be interested in acting. Even though everyone in the family
agreed, including Suveha, she has not decided to leave her +1 studies behind. Only
the success of her debut film, Style, will decide whether her
future is in cinema or studies.
Nerukkar.. It is about time that actors began pursuing directing
opportunities more aggressively, right?.. Seems to be the case for Dr. Rajasekar's brother
(aka former minister Indrakumari's son-in-law) Selva to jump into the limelight with his
own venture. He plans to direct a full length comedy titled Golmaal.
What he was looking for was a traditional 'poovum pottum vechchu pudavai katti kondu' type
heroine, but what he ended up with was Monica Nerukkar. A Mumbai based model who is
most famous for her appearance in the Maggie Dosa T.V. commercial in India.
Whether or not Monica knows to act or not, she perfectly fits the stunning
description of a heroine that Selva provided. The photo, on the left, should pretty
much tell the story :-)
the wheel turns, it is time for another popular Hindi pada heroine to make her grand
arrival into Kodambakkam and this time, no less than the Dil To Pagal Hai heroine,
Karishma Kapoor will be introduced. So far as we know, Karishma is
scheduled to act in a film with music by A.R.Rahman and to be produced by A.V.M.
Productions. When the official announcement of this film's existance will come..
only the lord knows! Meanwhile, K.T.Kunjumon had signed Karishma to dance for one
song in Koteeswaran and had erected a huge set worth lakhs and
lakhs of rupees. To Kunjumon's surprise, Karishma did not come to shooting and
instead attended the shooting of a film produced by Bal Thackeray's son. Paavam
Kunjumon, bayangara kobam.. what else to do?!
few new directors make some headway in 1998, including Karthik, who
directs Sandhosam starring Saravanan and Suvalakshmi.
Unfortunately, Karthik has been nicely oram kattu-fied by Agathiyan, who has written the
story, dialogues and lyrics for the film. So much for Karthik's big break!..
(Director Karthik and Actor Karthik are two different people!).. Sashi
is scheduled to direct Super Good Films' Sollamale. What
was initially a title set for a Balasekaran film seems to have been utilized for this
newcomer's film instead. Wasting time is something that Actor Vijay cannot put up
with. As a result, he started listening to several story-tellers who wanted to
become directors and discovered Vincent Selva. It was during one of
these story telling sessions that Vijay fell in love with the story that Vincent Selva
told him. The project called Priyamudan, produced by
Lakshmi Movie Makers (Gokulaththil Seethai) is fast growing as
Kausalya (Kaalamellaam Kaadhal Vaazhga) co-stars with Vijay.
producers should be worried crazy by now. Just because K.T.Kunjumon's son decided
that he wanted to act, a lot of potti has suddenly taken shape. Senthilkumar,
currently a B.A. student and son of Producer A.L.Azhagappan (currently producing Ini
Ellam Sugame) has also developed this vibareedha aasai. Besides doing
a small role in Ini Ellam Sugame, Senthil is anxiously awaiting
the moment when his father will announce a film where Senthil will play the hero
role. He attributes his younger days watching Kamal, Rajini and Vijaykanth to be his
inspiration to now act in films. Moreover, Senthilkumar also says he wishes to
pursue direction and cinematography as soon as he can establish himself as a good actor.
Nandhini jumped into tamil cinema in a rather unexpected way. A Delhi-yite, Nandhini had just won first prize in a beauty contest in Trivandrum and had joined as a air hostess for 'Skyline.' Before she knew it, she found herself in Chennai, modelling part-time and enjoying life. Her stills caught the eyes of Director Velu Prabhakaran, who immediately signed her to star in his mixed-commentary-on-religion called Kadavul. Nandhini is a Sikh by birth and her father is a commander in the military. Strange how we pick most of our newcomer heroines from military families.
would surely be nice to finish off with some newcomers who have had rotten luck and hoping
to have better luck in the very near future. Speaking of the worst kind of luck one
could have, only Shilpa Shirodkar comes to mind. Everyone does feel
bad for her. After all, who would have anticipated that Arasiyal
would bundle up so quickly and rush out of theaters so fast. So much for the good
times!.. And then, there's soon-to-be Mrs. Parthi Bhaskar.. Sangita.
Being Deva's daughter is one thing, but becoming Ilaiyaraja's daughter-in-law.. that's a
whole new ball game. Besides probably feeling thrilled about marrying Parthi Bhaskar
(Ilaiyaraja's brother Bhaskar's son!), Sangita is trying her hand at establishing a career
as a playback singer (a la Israth (A.R.Rahman's sister), Bhavatharini
(Raja's daughter) etc.) Her first song, Indha Devadhai-kku in Kaadhale
Nimmadhi went down with a thud. She hopes that her singing under daddy
Deva's music direction for Kaadhal Vandhirichchi will make all
the difference in the world. Aaakka.. Aaakka.. Aarambame Super Akka..
