When story writers run out of ideas they try to watch Hollywood film videos. Less affordables and less knowledgables watch old Tamil movies. Even those who can't be bothered would watch Telugu/Hindi movies for remake (Service to Tamil viewers!!). Here Adhiyaman is inspired by quite a few old movies with triangular love story. Unashamedly Vikatan took courage in publishing this story in advance. Lucky souls are those who did not care to read.
An illiterate, quick-witted, smart cookie (another typical role for Parthiban) falls in love with a classical dancer (Devayani). To add spice and novelty, she happens to be a Thasi's (a keep to Manivannan - the local MLA) daughter. The dancer loves him too (eventually!!) with her mom's blessings. Fate strikes!. In other words Parthiban disappears on one fine day (to the director). Madras-bound Devayani finds fame and wealth, and also a sensitive, caring Engineer friend (Prakashraj). 'Loves' blossoms again. When she tries to express her feelings to him, fate strikes again. That is Parthiban returns to stake his claim. What will she decide? a) To marry smart Parthiban or b) 'sambar' Prakashraj, or c) dedicate her life to dance, or d) decide to be good friends with everyone and live happily thereafter.
Devayani in the title role excels when she is not around. It would be too much for her to do Bharatha Natyam as the dancer role demands. The director knew the obvious flaw and she dances only for a minute or two for the entire film. One must admit she is improving. Parthiban steals the show (but has no competition), with another good performance after his Bharathi Kannamma. Prakashraj must cut down his trademark mannerisms (He shows more 'muththirais' than Devayani). Fathima Babu and Manivannan fit the role well. The Thotta Shinungi director really disappoints. Better luck next time Swararaj. The camera work is brilliant. Watch it only if you have nothing else to do.
